West Nile Virus Arrives a Month Early in Denver

Mosquito Forecast ProgramThe dangerous West Nile virus has arrived a month early in Colorado. According to news reports, mosquitoes carrying the virus have already been found in the counties of Adams, Boulder, Delta, Mesa and Weld. Mosquitoes are actually responsible for spreading the West Nile virus across the United States, and have been labeled the deadliest animals on earth. Humans are infected with the West Nile virus by mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds.

The early arrival of the virus in Colorado was prompted by this year’s unseasonably high temperatures and above-average snow and rainfall. Experts warn the early cases could be a sign of a bad season to come. With these tough conditions, it’s even more important to take precautions. Below are four tips to keep your family safe.

1. Stay inside during the most active periods.

Mosquitoes are most active between dusk to dawn. If possible, stay indoors during these peak hours.

2. Keep windows and doors closed.

It’s nice to enjoy the outdoor breeze, but to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home, keep doors and windows closed. If you must open them, ensure you have a tightly-sealed screen installed.

3. Wear protective clothing when going outside.

If you plan to go outside, especially for a long period of time, wear light clothing that covers your body. Wear long sleeves and pants, and closed-toe shoes and socks.

4. Protect your home with a comprehensive mosquito pest control service.

Treat the home and outdoor area with regular professional pest control service. This includes bushes, trees and yard area, to create a no-fly zone for mosquitoes.
