At EcoShield, we believe true service goes beyond pest control. It is about showing care, integrity, and compassion in every situation. Recently, one of our Oklahoma City technicians, Blake, lived up to that standard in a way no one could have predicted.
During a routine service call, Blake heard unusual noises coming from a customer’s property. Curious, he investigated and found a baby deer trapped in a barbed wire fence. The fawn’s leg had become tightly caught between two strands of wire, leaving it unable to move. Nearby, the customer’s children stood in distress, unsure of how to help.
Without hesitation, Blake ran to his truck to retrieve his leather gloves. These were tools he normally uses for handling brush, sharp objects, and other job hazards, but this time they became the key to a rescue mission. “I usually have a pair of leather gloves in my truck just in case—whether it’s brush, screws, or something sharp around a home. You don’t want to hurt yourself,” he explained.
Working carefully, Blake freed the deer’s leg from the wire. To reassure the children, he allowed them to gently pet the animal before guiding it back to safety. The children’s mother arrived just in time to see the rescue and was deeply moved by his quick thinking and kindness.
“They were just happy,” Blake said humbly. “I wasn’t really thinking much—I was just trying to help the deer and finish my job so I could go to the next one on time.”
A few days later, the customer reached out to EcoShield’s office to express her gratitude.
When reflecting on his time with EcoShield, Blake credits supportive leadership for empowering him to go the extra mile. “You can only do as good of a job as your manager allows you to,” he shared. “If your manager communicates well and supports you, it allows you to go above and beyond. Honestly, it’s spoiled me—it’ll be hard to work for anyone else because I have such a good management team here. They let me pursue excellence.”
For John, Blake’s story highlights the importance of trusting instincts as a leader. “Blake was one of my first hires. For me as a manager, it’s about going with your gut. Blake had an excellent resume, but there was also just something about him. Since then, I’ve learned to trust my gut, and we’ve built a very good crew here. We’ve really raised the bar as far as service.”
